Experience

Martin is a professional manager with over 25 years of corporate business management experience in regulated and non-regulated environments.  His experience draws upon both fields, including business transformation and troubleshooting.   

Martin has demonstrated a high degree of commitment to delivering Customer Service, operational support and infrastructure management.  This includes project management and implementation of regulatory and quality standards.  

He brings with him a number of years’ experience of management in the legal marketplace in both in Operational, Practice Management and Compliance roles.

Background

Originally from Leicester, Martin began with a national utilities company. Upon moving to Northamptonshire in 1998, he worked on a permanent and consultancy basis before starting a career in the legal sector.

 

Outside of work Martin enjoys socialising with Friends and Family. He is a keen lover of German Shepherd Dogs and undertakes volunteer work for a National Dog rehoming charity.

Will Cowell

Role

Family and Litigation – Senior Partner and Head of Department

Experience

Will’s legal career began in 1990 and he became a fully qualified solicitor in 1994. He worked in the West Midlands until 2002, before deciding to return to East Anglia. He joined Miller Sands in 2005 and partnership followed a year later.

Will is a strong believer in negotiation rather than litigation. He qualified as a Collaborative Lawyer in 2005 and is a Resolution Accredited Specialist in Advanced Financial Provision and Private Child Law.

Will is a good listener and problem solver. He has wide-ranging experience in almost all areas of family law and believes in setting the highest standards.

Background

Will was born in Newmarket, and has always regarded this area as “home”. He trained and worked originally as an engineer, reading for his degree here at Cambridge. After an encounter with litigation as a company director in 1985, he felt drawn to a legal career. He has practised in family law throughout his training and since qualification.

Outside of work Will stays busy. He has one daughter, is a Trustee of a local Museum and is currently on the committee of Cambridgeshire & District Law Society. He is an accomplished marksman, competing at National level in target shooting, and will take any opportunity to go tenpin bowling. He also supports his wife Diane in her love and care of horses.

Virginia Lloyd

Role

Litigation – Senior Solicitor

Experience

Virginia’s legal career began in 2000 in London.  She qualified as a solicitor in 2003.  She has worked as a litigator in both the private and public sector and joined Miller Sands in January 2019.

Virginia has experience of handling a wide range of legal issues facing companies and individuals in disputes and claims.  She can provide initial advice and an assessment of the options before representing clients in negotiation, mediation and litigation proceedings. 

Background 

Virginia has a Master’s degree in Law from the University of Nottingham.  She has experience of civil litigation, licensing and regulatory crime gained in both the public and private sectors.

Outside of work, Virginia practises yoga and attends art classes.

Rebecca Varey

Role

Family – Senior Solicitor

Experience 

Rebecca’s legal career began in 1997 when she worked as a Trainee Legal Executive for two years before going to University to study Law.  Rebecca qualified as a Solicitor in 2005 and has worked exclusively in Family Law ever since.

Rebecca worked in Essex before joining Miller Sands in December 2017.

Rebecca is a member of Resolution and is a good listener, focusing on client care and achieving the best possible outcome for her client’s during an often difficult stage in their lives.

Outside of work, Rebecca enjoys spending time with her family and Jazzercise.

Ryan Hawthorn TEP

Role

Private Client – Consultant Solicitor

Experience

Ryan qualified as a solicitor in 1975 after working for three years in Lincoln’s Inn, London, in a firm of solicitors specialising in probate, trust and tax work. He has continued to specialise in this field, mainly in the Cambridge area. In addition to “normal” probate, trust and tax matters, Ryan has handled a number of contentious probate cases.  Ryan is a full member of STEP.

Background

Ryan was born in South Africa and, prior to moving to London, practised as a solicitor in Johannesburg. He lives in Cambridge and is married with four adult children. His interests are music, reading and travel.

Experience and Background

Vicky has worked for Miller Sands since December 2012 and completed her solicitor’s training contract with the firm. She qualified as a solicitor in 2015 and specialises in will writing and advice, probate and estate administration and lasting and enduring powers of attorney.

Before joining Miller Sands, Vicky worked as a school teacher. She credits this with her ability to relate to many different people and to explain complex matters clearly.

Julia Hutchings

Experience

Julia Hutchings joined Miller Sands in October 2015. She has over a decade of experience in all aspects of the Conveyancing Process having been head of residential property at her previous firm. Her calm, efficient approach means that she is able to offer clients a quality service.

Michael entered the profession over 40 years ago.  Half of his experience is as a self employed Locum covering some of the most talented Solicitors in London, the Home Counties and East Anglia.  Michael is well known for his professionalism, approachability and adaptability.  He brings to the Firm a rare mix of extensive specialised knowledge of residential conveyancing and an awareness of the best of modern practices, for the benefit of our Clients.

Emma Jayne Sheehan

Role

Property – Senior Solicitor

Experience

Emma-Jayne Sheehan joined Miller Sands in May 2010 as a property solicitor. She qualified as a solicitor in 2000 and worked in London for several years before relocating to Cambridge. Emma-Jayne currently supports the residential conveyancing team on Wednesdays and Fridays when Julia or Mike is out of the office, making sure that matters are progressed as swiftly as possible.  She also deals with all property matters arising on a death, complex transfers of equity, first registration of title and commercial property matters.
