So lets go back to the basics, what does Family Law actually cover?
Well, it can cover a wide range of different disputes and claims including:
- Child custody
- Visitation rights
- Financial settlements and distribution of assets
- Domestic violence
- Child abuse and neglect
All of these areas are very emotional and personal matters to deal with, so it’s really important that you select the solicitor that is right for you and your circumstances.
If you need some help deciding on the right solicitor for you then the following 5 points are worth considering.
1 – Price
We have listed this as no.1 as it is potentially the first thing that many of us consider when selecting a solicitor.
However, it would be advisable to consider it, but not let it influence your decision entirely.
Many of the above matters will have an undefined time allocation, so you need to find out both daily and hourly rates and ensure that you ask to be informed of costs on a regular basis.
It is important to note that the most expensive solicitor does not necessarily equate to the best. Equally, the cheapest could have the necessary experience for your case, so be sure to consider all options.
2 – Connection
This is vitally important when choosing a solicitor for any family law case. You need to feel comfortable to allow you to be 100% honest with your situation and feelings so that your solicitor can translate this into the best solution for you.
3 – Mediation
To go through the mediation process is not currently a legal requirement. However, it would be advisable to select a solicitor that holds mediation at the core of their ethos. Going to court should be considered as the last resort. Resolving cases through careful and meaningful communication is always the best route, with the least emotional impact for all parties involved.
4 – Experience
Before you select your solicitor take a look at their background. Are they specialists in their area? How long have they been practising? Are there any client testimonials or case studies that will give you some insight into their approach and performance?
5 – Accreditation
Do they, or their firm, have any form of accreditation, such as Resolution? If this isn’t obvious on their website feel free to drop them a line, they will be pleased to give you this information.
Hopefully these 5 key points should help you make an informed decision on the best solicitor for you.
